At HCM, we are passionate about great public space design. Creating a high-quality sense of place in our projects that is uniquely identifiable is at the core of our mission. HCM utilizes proven placemaking design principles to create dynamic, high performing, sustainable public space.
Parks and open spaces are the tissue that connects a community to the natural environment, providing places to celebrate, socialize, recreate, or find solitude. Recognizing the intrinsic qualities of a site, we have created contextual and ecologically sustainable designs for urban parks, school yards and play environments, community parks and nature centers. These public parks and green spaces provide safe, delightful, and memorable experiences that are vital to our communities and cities.

Soda Springs Park
Client: Town of Parker
Size: 1.6 Acres
Cost: $2 Million
Adjacent to the Town of Parker’s Main Street, the O’Brien Park playground is a destination for families of all ages and abilities. The re-design of an existing, outdated traditional playground was revitalized to reflect the community spirit and create an adventurous and inclusive play space for everyone from toddlers to adults. Creating an immersive, intergenerational play space was the driving force for the design. Filled with iconic, custom designed play structures, a hillside play experience with a built-in rock-climbing wall, musical instruments, a multitude of ADA accessible play features, and sandblasted features that pay homage to the history of the Town, this playground is designed to meet a range of sensory, cognitive, social, emotional, communicative, and physical needs.
Client: Denver Tennis Park
Size: 12 Acres
Cost: $23 Million
The new Denver Tennis Park facility is designed to meet the needs of underprivileged youth programs, Denver Public Schools, and University of Denver tennis students, featuring seven indoor courts and six outdoor courts. Located on the Denver South High School campus and operated by a non-profit organization dedicated to youth engagement in tennis, the facility includes fitness areas, multi-use spaces, viewing areas, administrative offices, and locker rooms. The entry plaza serves as a gathering space, incorporating xeriscape plantings and diverse seating options along with bicycle parking. The outdoor courts are equipped with sports lighting, spectator viewing areas, shade canopies, and a half-court practice wall, enhancing the overall experience for players and spectators alike.
HCM worked with BMS on a full renovation of their campus dining facility. This new facility serves to improve student health and wellness, by creating additional gathering space on campus, and creating serving spaces and facilities that allow improved food service on campus. The design features historic architectural elements that were uncovered and celebrated in the new space, giving the girls a warm centrally located campus heart.
Client: City of Manitou Springs
Size: 1.9 Acres - Master Plan/ .25 - Phase 1
Cost: $390,000 (Phase 1)
The existing Soda Springs Park is situated in the heart of Historic Downtown Manitou Springs, Colorado. A master plan update was developed in collaboration with the community and parks board. The plan focused on activating the undeveloped and under-utilized west end of the park as the first phase of construction. The design prioritized having a restored sense of safety and functionality with the existing developed area of the park by including a decorative plaza, unique play area, accessible walkways and seating, boulder creek access with consideration to the local ecosystem and floodplain, security lighting, and a new flexible lawn to support day use and annual park events. This completed portion of the park anchors the space with engaging, multigenerational recreational activities. The park improvements have been enthusiastically received by residents and visitors and created momentum for future park improvements.
Client: South Suburban Park & Recreation District
Size: 7.5 Acres
Cost: $11 Million
The Southpark Pickleball Complex, located within the South Suburban Park and Recreation District and Highlands Ranch Metro District, addresses the growing demand for accessible pickleball amenities in nearby residential neighborhoods. This outdoor facility features 19 courts divided into two areas, connected by a Private Drive and designed to accommodate a significant 20 to 30 feet of grade change on either side while maintaining minimal slopes. Each side includes parking and ensures accessible pedestrian connectivity for safe crossing of the Private Drive, allowing seamless access to the courts. Amenities on both sides consist of restroom/storage buildings, a large picnic shelter for up to 64 people, two smaller picnic shelters along the main pedestrian corridor, bicycle racks, court-side seating, and landscaped areas with shade trees and native plants.
Southpark Pickleball Complex
Client: EventsDC
Size: 190 Acres
Cost: $32 Million
Hord Coplan Macht partnered with Events DC and MCN Build to execute the first phase of the 190-acre Robert F. Kennedy Stadium complex redevelopment. This phase transforms a 30-acre parking lot into vibrant green spaces, featuring three multi-purpose turf fields, festival areas, and entertainment facilities to meet the increasing demand for athletic and recreational options in Washington, DC. The new facility accommodates youth soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, and various community events. Key amenities include a large event plaza, lawn areas, trails, a children’s playground, adult fitness equipment, and a 6,000-square-foot events pavilion for gatherings such as tournaments and concerts. Additional structures comprise restrooms, a flexible-use pavilion, a shade pavilion, and storage. Located along the Anacostia River, the project incorporates sustainable design elements such as the removal of impervious surfaces, soil remediation, pervious green areas, stormwater bio-retention facilities, and native plantings.
Client: M-NCPPC
Size: 25 Acres
Cost: $4 Million
Greenbriar Park is a 25-acre park located in Montgomery County, Maryland, featuring trails, interpretive play, soccer, basketball and volleyball, a forested stream valley, re-created meadows, and integrated storm water management.
Site features were sensitively located by creatively manipulating topography, integrating innovative stormwater management, and capitalizing on natural views. Locally sourced materials including stone from the last operating quarry in Montgomery County were used in walls, paving and piers. All plant material was custom grown in the public agency’s nursery.
